UPDATE:
If you’re looking for SATA Driver for Gateway Computer:

UPDATED 07.21.2007

Gateway® GT5404
Intel® Desktop Board D945GCL (click here for Windows XP drivers from Intel)

Gateway® GT5404 Desktop comes with Windows Vista Home Premium pre-installed. I posted a little review on this computer in March and mentioned that I installed Windows XP Pro on it. Since then I have been getting question on how to get Windows XP to recognize the Serial-ATA drive. The BIOS of the motherboard allows to configure the SATA devices as IDE so that Windows XP installers can detect the drive without having to install the SATA driver first.

The same method also works for Gateway® GT5408 Desktop.

UPDATE: the main database where the pictures were hosted crashed and gone. I’ll re-upload the pictures soon.

I’ll post more on where to get the Windows XP drivers for this computer and Gateway® GT5408 Desktop.

Thanks! This helped alot… Thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

2. Cadapult - June 25, 2007

Thanks very much for this info. Gateway tech support was useless (”We can’t help you if you didn’t buy XP from us.”), and good luck finding anything of use on their website, including SATA drivers for the GT5408. I’m disconnecting the drive with Vista and replacing it with a 320gig SATA HDD and installing XP. When (if?) Microsoft ever fixes Vista I’ll hook the Vista drive back up, reformat the XP drive and use it in a RAID array.
Please *do* post any sources for XP drivers that you find.
Best regards,
Cadapult

Can you further explain how you edited the bios and “The BIOS of the motherboard allows to configure the SATA devices as IDE so that Windows XP installers can detect the drive without having to install the SATA driver first.” configured the bios exactly. Like what screens to go to and edit settings?

4. John B - July 21, 2007

Ahh, the picture just popped in above with the bios. I think I got it now, thx.

5. John B - July 21, 2007

Oh, forgot to ask. For the updated drivers for mobo to work with XP instead of vista, where did you find them? ie, network, graphics, chipset?

Hope this help.

I’ll post more as I could remember what else to get.

This is very helpful, thanks! I am downgrading my GT5408 from Vista to XP - actually I just stuck the WD SATA HD in and updated chipset and ethernet drivers. I am having trouble with the integrated sigmatel sound drivers which won’t install - I keep getting an error message - device object not present, restart. Would appreciate any thoughts. Desktop board D945GCF.

To my knowledge, you can use drivers from Intel’s D945GCL. The difference between D945GCF and D945GCL is primarily the built in FireWire on D945GCF.

Hi, i have the same problem to install windows XP , because you have to get de SATA drivers, But i didn`t know that you cab do it with the BIOS , Thank you very much it was very Helpfull..!!

9. JEFF CAMP "JC" - October 2, 2007

I’VE GOT A GT5404 AND DESPISE IT. I KNOW VERY LITTLE ABOUT COMPUTERS AND HERE IS MY QUESTION. I ONLY WANT TO USE THIS CPU FOR BAND-IN-A-BOX MUSIC. IT WILL PORT INTO A YAMAHA KEYBOARD. THERE’S SO MUCH CRAP AND SOFTWARE ON THIS I KNOW I DON’T NEED. BUT I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO TO GET STARTED “CLEANING” THIS UP. I NEED HELP PLEASE.

Jeff, what don’t you like about the current system?
First and foremost, you need more RAM. GT5404 comes with 1GB (2×512MB) PC4200. Get at least 2GB PC5300 RAM.
Second, buy a PCI-Express Graphics Card. They’re relatively cheap. At minimum get nVidia GeForce 7 series or even 8 series with minimum of 256MB VRAM.
Third, If you think that Windows Vista is sluggish, the other alternative is to downgrade to Windows XP.
Fourth, you can always replace the Processor later on, whenever Core 2 Duo becomes cheaper.

To clean up the system, the most effective way is to reinstall the Operating System, Vista or XP.

If you have anymore questions, leave a message here.

I need XP drivers for what the control pannel has labled:
PCI Device
PCI Simple Communications Controller
and SM Bus Controller

Since you are curently (according to a Google search this morning) the authoratative source for this information, I am asking you to please bail me out! :)

I have to get back to you for the details.
PCI Simple Communications Controller = modem (don’t remember what it was, but I’ll find it out again.
PCI Device and SM Bus Controller should be taken care of after installing Chipset driver from Intel - if I remember it correctly.

Once again, I’ll check the machine and will post more details.

11. Dave - October 11, 2007

I have everything installed. but the (intel) sigmatel high definition audio codec is not working. under device properties it says, “This device cannot start. (code 10)”

UPDATE 2007.10.23 Audio Driver

OK, let’s try this:
Remove the Sigmatel Audio from Hardware profile
Reinstall the driver
See if that works.

I’ll check again if there were something different that I did.

12. PCUser - October 22, 2007

Dave The same thing is happening to my PC.. Sigma Tel Cannot open the sound file… How can i fix it.. i tried uninsalling the drive and resinstalling it but it does not work… Can anyone help me plz.. My Email is Juic3@tmail.com.. Email Me if u can help ASAP!!

UPDATE 2007.10.23 Audio Driver

If it’s not still working, uninstall the audio driver then use Windows Update to detect the driver.

Not sure why it’s not working for you. Make sure you have the chipset software installed. I have to take a look into the computer, but I don’t have immediate access to it. Please bear with me.

Thanks a lot for ur help finally i have windows vista out of my system i gotta get the drivers for my hardwares tho, bt ill find them… once again thanks getting rid of windows vista was turning into a huge headache.

randy.

You’re welcome. You should have a fully functional Windows XP with all the links I provided. I have been running Windows XP on this computer since February 2007.

16. Hick - November 9, 2007

One small question. What about the Card Reader drivers in the GT5408 model? I am downgrading from Vista to XP bercause the guys wife can’t stand vista at all.

As far as I know, there’s no special drivers needed. The one I installed XP on has the Card Readers working without problems.

17. Ernie - November 11, 2007

Hey, I installed Windows XP Professional SP2 on my GT5408, but the sm bus controller, audio ,pci and video drivers are not compatible with xp, which ones do i get where do i get them? I have been to intel, but every time i download the drivers, it tells me they dont work because of the operating system or something. Please give me some feedback on this thanks.

Have you installed the chipset driver first? As far as I know, D945GCF is pretty much identical to D945GCL with addition of Firewire controller on the motherboard.

18. Ernie - November 11, 2007

Where exactly do i get the right chipset driver for D945GCF… because the one in http://downloadcenter.intel.com/filter_results.aspx?strTypes=all&ProductID=2613&OSFullName=Windows*+XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go%21 doesnt work properly?

As far as I know, Intel has unified Chipset driver.
Intel Chipset Driver here.

Try that.

19. Ernie - November 11, 2007

K I install XP but i can’t get the Video Controller(vga compatible) yeah… i try to install the GFX_XP32 pacakage and it says This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. Setup will exit.

G965/Q963 Express Chipset Family Video click here

20. Ernie - November 12, 2007

I tried to install the G965/Q963 Express Chipset Family Video software, but it said the same “This computer does not meet the minimum requirements for installing the software. Setup will exit. Sorry to keep on bugging.

Interesting. That computer does have the G965/Q963 Express Chipset Family Video. I am not sure why it’s not working on your computer. Are you installing Windows XP 32-bit or 64-bit.

21. Ernie - November 12, 2007

Windows XP 32-bit

I am not sure what is going on with your system. Try the followings:
First, make sure you have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed.

Go to Device Manager, uninstall all the unknown devices, then reinstall the chipset drivers. Reboot. Make sure the Network driver is installed.

Update Windows through Windows Update or Microsoft Update. Reboot, etc….

Then try the drivers.

Hope this works for you.

I have a Gateway GT5438 and no matter what driver I used I could never get the onboard audio for the D945GCF to work correctly in XP. Finally I just downloaded EVERY SigmaTel driver from Gateway and spent about an hour go through each and every driver to see which would finally work. I am happy to say that the SigmaTel 5208 driver found at the link below fixed my issue and allowed me to hear my audio again. If the link below doesn’t come out right just do a search in Google for “Gateway 9536675 driver” and it should be the first link.

http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/getFile.asp?id=20946&dscr=SigmaTel%20Audio%20Driver%20version:%205.10.5208&uid=17825464

Thanks for your contributions.

24. benjamin - November 30, 2007

I have the 5404 from gateway.. i still have vista on it and am trying to find out if i can use the drivers from intel on my pc. Everytime i try i get this error about the drivers not being certified or something like that. I have a few games and they keep telling me that i don’t have the latest drivers from intel, but the computer only seems to want to take gateway drivers.. and fix for this

I don’t think you can quite use the Intel drivers on the Gateway-shipped version of Windows Vista on that computer.

25. pete - November 30, 2007

I bought a 5404 from tiger direct. I didnt want vista. I put my xp cd and was able to modify the partions, and than install xp. Should i have changed the bios from sata to ide? XP seems to work just fine. I would like to know if i did something wrong before i install all my apps.

thanks

If it’s working, than you don’t have to change anything. You need to change it IF Windows XP Install disc does not recognize the SATA controller.

26. NM - December 1, 2007

I just bought a GT5428. I’m trying to install XP as described above (by configuring SATA device as IDE in the BIOS). After a while during the installation process (after installing some drivers), it gives an error message.
I thought the issue might be the BIOS itself. So, I tried to update the BIOS using the Intel latest BIOS update as described above. It also gives me an error message as follows:

BIOSID’s do not match
Currently installed BIOS ID:
CF94510J.15A.0038.2007.0226.1646
Attempting to install BIOS ID:
CL94510J.86A.0034.2007.0905.1956

Does anybody know what is going on?

Any help would be appreciated.

NM

Just to be clear, I didn’t mention anything about upgrading the BIOS. I’m talking about the actual device drivers. What does the error message say?

27. Frank - December 4, 2007

Thanks for the pointers. Fed up with vista so moved back to XP Pro on my Gateway GT5404. Once I got over the mbr damage vista had done it was just a matter of drivers. You saved my weekend. I installed the following packages all from the intel web site on a CF94510J.15A bios mb without any problems.
Video; GFX_XP32_14.31.1.4864_PV_Intel.exe
Audio; AUD_allOS_x5511_v5511_PV_IDTGUI_v005.exe
Chipset; INF_AllOS_8.4.0.1016_PV_Intel.exe
Network; LAN_allOS_12.1_PV_Intel_141678.exe
Storage; STOR_All32_f6flpy32_7.8.0.1012_PV_Intel.exe

Anyone find the modem driver?

28. Bernard - December 8, 2007

Thanks alot for all the information.

I have a Gateway® GT5408 with an Intel® Desktop Board D945GCF.

My problem is can’t install vista on my 320GB SATA II hard drive, although vista can see the hard drive during the installation process. The problem is that i keep getting this particular error message:- Failed to create a new partition on the selected unused space. Error: 0×80042453

The problem began when i decided to work the 9GB partition on which the vista was installed because it was small and out of space.

The most annoying part of all is that my bios settings are exactly the same as the settings in the picture you have posted.

I really need help cos i dont know what to do to resolve this. In addition XP just gives a black screen and cant progress with dos/clean installation

I am not sure what’s going on with your installations. Try deleting the partition, then create new one.

29. Bernard - December 8, 2007

Hi Frank,

You said “once I got over the mbr damage vista had done it was just a matter of drivers. ”

Ques: How exactly were you able to resolve the mbr damage vista had done?

Kindly help me with utilities or softwares and procedures to also resolve mine.

As the hard drive, i can clearly see it the bios but just cant install xp or vista on it.

30. James - December 11, 2007

I’m pretty late to the discussion, but I thought I’d post my experience with the GM5626. It has the D945GCFG1 board in it but doesn’t have the “Configure SATA as” option. I changed the ATA/IDE mode to legacy to get XP to recognize the drive. It displays an annoying error that says “internal hardware not supported” for about 1 second but goes away and boots normally.

Thanks for the tip!

31. Jim - December 24, 2007

I just bought a Gateway GT5408 desktop computer from TigerDirect. Previously purchased a WindowsXP Home Edition Full OEM SP2 w/ COA disc. I want to install XP and get rid of Vista completely. I havent received the computer yet but will in about 2 or 3 days. What kind of problems will I run into doing this? Remembering that this computer wont have a floppy disc player only the Dual-Layer DVD±RW burner drive. Thanks for any help regarding this.

Based on my experience, the toughest part is finding the device drivers. Search through this blog for GT5404 or GT5408. If you have any questions, leave a message here.

32. Allan - December 26, 2007

I just boiught a Gateway GT5408, too. I read all the posts here and almost successfully downgraded from Vista to XP Home.
My last problem is I can’t load Video Contoller (VGA Compatible).
Each time I try, it says my Computer requirements are not met.

Been at it since Xmas Day…can you advise on how to get this machine to see a Video Controller?
Thanks for all the great info.

Is it the integrated Intel GMA or a PCI-X Graphics controller?
Which driver are you trying to install?

If it’s for Intel GMA, download it from Intel site.

33. Allan - December 26, 2007

I am going to the links that the posts above send me to. The Intel site.
The error message says “your computer does not have minimum requirements”.
when I try to download the Intel Graphics for Windows XP.

Not sure what is meant by GMA.
My device manager has a yellow question mark on the Sound, Video and Game Contoller. I uninstall it…and use the Windows Update to no avail.

It’s the last issue with the computer. If I can get it working I will have the complete downgrade to XP Home.

HELP! Thanks for all the great info on this post. Couldn’t have done what I did so far.

Intel GMA refers to the integrated video card. Worse case scenario, get a PCI-X video card; it’s as low as $50.

34. Allan - December 26, 2007

PS Ernie in the messages above had the same problem, but he didn’t say if and how it was resolved.

35. Allan - December 27, 2007

Tried a few different Intel Chip set downloads. The links listed above link right to the appropriate chipsets but video controller says same message.

I also don’t have a functional “stand-by”. When I want to turn off the computer I should be able to choose “stand-by” but it’s not selectable.
Can you advise on that too.
THANK YOU!

I am not sure how or why it doesn’t work for you.
I have no problems installing the latest Intel Chip-Set software; I installed the latest one, because there’s only one unified installer now.

36. Michael - December 27, 2007

thank you for the information on this page, gateway was no help, but for 129.00 they would tell me yes or no once we changed the drive configuration, we were able to load XP with no problems, so thank you once again.

37. Jeff - January 3, 2008

It is really help! Thanks a lot!

38. Jonathan - January 5, 2008

Ok so I am fed up with Vista as well. I am trying to “downgrade” to Windows XP. The dis I have is Version 2002. It was a SP1 install. I was planning to update to SP2 once installed. I so far have upgraded my memory to 2×1gb PC-5300 and have also installed a PNY GeForce 8600GTS 512MB OC. Well I am giving this info on my system now to see if perhaps it will shed light on why I’m having this issue. Well I went and changed the HDD to IDE in Bios like mentioned above. However while I’m trying to go through the installation I get this error screen. Well I gave a link to the picture I took of it with my camera. I tried taking out the PCI-E vid card and going back to on board video. I even put the 56k modem back in to get it close to original system specs. I kept getting the same error no matter what I did. Any ideas?

Thanks
Jonathan

I had similar problems with different computers. If memory served correctly, you need Windows XP WITH SP2 install CD.
What you need to do is to SLIPSTREAM SP2 into your Windows XP Install CD, or get Windows XP with SP2 CD.

If you’re not familiar with SLIPSTREAMing, look it up. I’ll post more later.

39. Jonathan - January 7, 2008

I went ahead and looked up the slipstream process last night and can proudly say that I’m on my Gateway GT5404 running Windows XP Pro as a result. It worked like a charm.

Thanks
Jonathan

Glad I can help.

40. Yang - January 10, 2008

Thanks for the information. Now my GT5404 is running XP. One thing I still can’t figure out is the XP driver for the 15-in-1 media card reader. The old 8-in-1 driver won’t work. Any idea?

Thanks a lot.

I let Windows XP install generic USB mass storage driver. If I remember it correctly, I had Windows Update to install newer drivers.

41. Raj - January 13, 2008

This site was of immense help when tying to install windows XP on Refurbished Gateway GT5408 that I purchased. I got amost all drivers off Intel’s website listed above. Modem driver is PCI simple communication controller and the driver is on Gateway website.

Gateway only supports the operating system that they installed on the system (Vista Home Premium). Other support requests are fee based.

42. matt - January 16, 2008

Hi I don’t have a G404 but my Gateway has a GeForce nVidia card in it, so what I did was to download the GeForce version 7 drivers from nvidia and yoohoo, it works great ! If your gateway has an added video card I don’t think you need the Intel thingie.

43. Dan - January 18, 2008

For the GT5408 you want the IDT Drivers (who bought out Sigmatel) from Intel for the D945PLRN board.

Hi 2 all ! Awesome forum ! I have the Gateway One -all in one desktop-and I like it very much. It`s a good toy for what I need to be done. But when I`ve upgraded the OS , from Vista Home Premium to Ultimate the issues start to appear . So ,as the smart tech`s on the Gateway`s live chat page told me : “Gateway does not support upgrades on OS preinstalled initially with the product!”. So ,All Gateway users!!! be carefull when you`ll upgrade the OS , BECAUSE THINGS CAN HAPPEN !!lLike : Multimedia buttons not functional , Eject buttons on the multimedia keyboard not functional , Web cam not functional,Tv tuner not functional ,Plus in the top of all I have a reccurent Stripe ,Line in the middle of the screen, changing colours ,appearing and dissappering from time to time . It`s a kind of Sad to find out after you upgrade but that`s life !You learn ! I have a question and I hope that somebody knows the answer ! What can I do to make the reccurent stripe ,line go away !? It is not a hardware problem ,lcd problem !!When I start the PC the line is not there! It comes, appears after 1 hour or so .
Configuration : http://reviews.cnet.com/desktops/gateway-one-gz7220/4505-3118_7-32627127.html

Thak you very much ! Julian

PS : I`ve tried to put back the OS with the Recovery Disks I made when I first powered the PC but only the applications were backed up ,not the Vista Home Premium !!!

I’m sorry to hear what happen to you. In general I’d stay away from All-In-One PC because of the custom hardwares. I am not sure why Vista Ultimate won’t recognize the drivers. Have you tried the drivers from the support page with Vista Ultimate?
http://support.gateway.com/support/drivers/search.asp?st=pn&param=1014809R

ATI Driver for Vista
http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=vista32/common-vista32

As for recovery disc, one way to get it is through Gateway, or Make one from the same computer at the local computer store. A bit tricky, but doable.

hope the best.

Hi all , i have a Gateway gt5428 and i fallow the instructions to install
windows xp pro sp2 and still not find the hard drive on installation .

Any suggestions ?

Make sure that you configure the BIOS so that the SATA is treated as IDE. Let me know what options you have on the BIOS.

47. Josh*eww*wuh - March 8, 2008

I just down graded from vista to xp on a gt5428. I wish i would have found this page sooner. I figured out all the Hard drive by myself. My problem is i can’t get connected to the internet.

it keeps saying “network cable unplugged”. I have installed all the drivers, and even uninstalled the ones i had and used the drivers from this page. it says the LAN device is working properly, but everytime i try to connect to the internet it says “network cable unplugged”

I have swaped the modem out, i have used a diffrent cable, i have uninstalled and re-installed the drivers. I hope SOMEONE can guide me in the right direction.

thanks again for your help

Was it working before you downgraded the OS? Just for clarifications, what’s the model for the Network Adapter?

48. RobbyD - March 13, 2008

Software was never my thing, I have a GT5404 with upgraded ram and an Nvidia 8500GT and I’m trying to install XP home onto my HDD…

Thats where I get lost, I’m not sure what to download or how I would install it (MY pc is non functioning and my friends dont own computers since they just use the schools, which is what I’m using now) Anyways because im at a school computer I’m not allowed to burn anything onto a disk, I do however have an External HDD kit and was wondering if its possible to install the drivers onto the external HDD then take the hard drive home and then install XP on the same hard drive

49. April - March 15, 2008 - March 15, 2008

Used the guide regarding changing the hard drive to IDE thru the bios and was able to get xp installed. The only thing I am trying to resolve now is a message that I get when the computer first powers on. It says:
“A problem with the hard drive has been deteced. Press enter to continue” I press enter and xp powers up fine.
I am now working on the drivers and should be fine. Will post back with the results of the driver install.
Thanks again.

how to access bios on the gt5404 ?

Press F2 when the computer first starting up.

51. rick harbin - March 27, 2008

i have a gateway gt5428 desktop. i down graded to windows xp from windows vista last year. i have the 15 in 1Media Card Reader. i cant get any of the card slots to work. i have looked for drivers to no avail. i am most interested in getting the sd slot to function, any help would be greatly appreciated.

I never installed specific media reader driver on Windows XP, the driver was taken care of by Windows XP and Windows Driver Update. For your reference, the Vista driver for the 15 in 1 Media Reader can be found here.

52. Jatin - April 17, 2008

Hi,
I recently bought a Dell 1525 Inspiron Notebook with Windows Vista Home Premium installed on it. I was able to install XP pro by playing around with the BIOS. I downloaded the compatible drivers for my hardware with XP Pro and installed then one by one.
When I installed sound drivers, my audio device (Integrated Stereo Sound) on the Intel 965GM chipset did not detect the sound drivers even though they were installed.
Can u please help me in pointing to a trusted source from where I can download the sound drivers and install them. I have already tried lots of sources but can’t get hold of correct drivers till now.

Please help me. !!!

Thanx in advance.

Try the followings:

1 Sigmatel HD Audio

2 Sigmatel HD Audio

3 Sigmatel HD Audio

4 Sigmatel HD Audio

5 Sigmatel HD Audio

Hope that any of them works.

If you don’t mind, let me know the process you’re going through in installing Windows XP on this Laptop.
